Bladder Exercises While You Are In Your Car

There is one exercise you can do for your mindful bladder while you are in the car: mindful breathing. While you are driving, develop a new habit. Every time you stop at a traffic light, take a full breath, expanding your belly. Take 4 counts to breathe in, then 4 counts to exhale. Scan your body and take note of any tension.

Remember to relax your shoulders and chest and breathe in and out from the belly. Were you hunching your shoulders? Frowning? Now raise your eyebrows to loosen your forehead, and smile. Take another deep breath. There, don’t you feel better already?

Research has shown that not only does our mood affect our facial expression, but our facial expression affects our mood, as well. Through the simple act of releasing your frown or grimace, and smiling instead, you are triggering positive changes in your body.

And by taking a deep breath, scanning for and releasing tension, you are activating your parasympathetic nervous system, which is good for relaxing your bladder. You want to key in to your relaxed, mindful state instead of the frazzled, adrenaline charged state of your sympathetic nervous system.

These two systems are like a see-saw: if one is up, the other is down. So bring up your parasympathetic nervous system with a few deep breaths and a scan for tension every time you stop at a traffic light. Tell us how you feel when you arrive at your destination!
